2014 Robert Sangster Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw

April 22nd, 2014

A particularly talented field of 14 has been confirmed to line up for the featured Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse this weekend, including talented mare A Time For Julia.

Securing an impressive total of four wins and four places from only eleven competitive race starts to date, A Time For Julia (barrier 9) has arguably returned to the track in career best form this preparation, winning the Group 2 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) first-up before producing a strong turn of foot to finish just off the pace of champion mare Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) on March 1st.

Returning to the winner’s circle when comfortably claiming the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute Quality (1200m) on March 15th, the Redoute’s Choice mare more than stamped her claims as one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming runners when finishing just off the pace in fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last time out; her maiden tilt at an event at the highest level of Australian Racing.

Having been included in nominations for last weekend’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick, trainer Peter Moody instead elected to accept a position in this weekend’s Morphettville feature on what is likely to be a far-sturdier track.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 Robert Sangster Stakes is in-form four-year-old Driefontein.

Contesting a strong total of seven wins and five places from 23 race starts to date, Driefontein has steadily built to the task this time in; finishing sixth in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) and fifth in the Millie Fox Stakes before scoring a near-two length victory in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) last time out.

While allocated the slightly wide barrier 11 for the 2014 Robert Sangster, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident the Fastnet Rock mare will complete back-to-back victories this weekend, particularly with in-form jockey Vlad Duric on board.

A strong performer over three race starts this time in, talented three-year-old Gregers will leave from barrier 10 in this weekend’s Robert Sangster Stakes, and has been confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Craig Williams.

Claiming four wins and three places from only 11 race starts so far, the Commands filly completed a particularly impressive 2013 spring preparation; finishing outside the places just once in six starts, claiming victory in Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and finishing third in the major Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1400m) most notably.

Returning to the track in typically competitive form this time in, Gregers was unlucky to finish fourth in the well contested Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up before claiming second in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) on March 8th.

Displaying a keen turn of foot when finishing a fighting fourth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last time out, trainer David Hayes is confident of another strong finish from his sole entrant in the 2014 Robert Sangster Stakes.

Allocated the wide and awkward barrier 14 for this weekend’s feature, Villa Verde will have to find the form that delivered a first-up victory in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) and third in the Group 1 The Galaxy on March 29th if any chance of breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the Robert Sangster.

The biggest winner at Tuesday’s Robert Sangster Stakes barrier draw, Nigel Blackiston-trained You’re So Good will leave from the inside barrier this weekend.
