2015 Robert Sangster Stakes to Figure for Vain Queen

January 13th, 2015

Securing several impressive results over a commendable 2014 spring racing campaign, trainer John Sadler has revealed he has mapped out a bold plan for talented five-year-old Vain Queen upon her 2015 resumption, which will include a stop-off in the featured Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in May.

Claiming seven wins from only 12 competitive appearances on course so far, Vain Queen was last seen at the races on Crown Oaks Day; displaying a keen turn of foot late to take out the Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1100m) by close to four lengths.

Yet to contest an event at the highest level of racing, Sadler is confident the Artie Schiller mare is more than capable of success and has confirmed he will target four Group 1 starts over autumn with Vain Queen, including the 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes.

“She’s probably three or four lengths behind the top sprinters but because she’s got that Group 3 under her belt we can probably have a bit of fun with her,” Sadler told Racing Victoria.

“Last preparation was really just all about trying to win a Group race.”

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by Vain Queen since returning to work, Sadler said the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 21st is likely to figure as the first point of call ahead of appearances in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), Robert Sangster Stakes and finally the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 16th.

“She’s only been back in the stable for a week but she’s had three to four weeks at the pre-trainer’s and has come back really well, she certainly hasn’t gone backwards,” Sadler said.

Running fourth in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1000m) upon returning to racing in April last year, Vain Queen was unlucky to be blocked when sixth in a minor over 1110m on May 17th, but responded in the best way possible in taking out both the Dominant Handicap (1200m) and All Victorian Handicap (1100m) in succession.

Placing a credible fourth in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final (1200m) on July 12th, the mare out of Our Teneriffe placed fourth in both the Group 3 TheShark.com.au Stakes (1100m) and Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) in her only other starts prior to her Mumm Stakes triumph.
