Hayes Thrilled with 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes Pair

May 1st, 2015

David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have been confirmed to saddle two runners in Gregers and Wawail in Saturday’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) and are confident the pair are both more than capable of overcoming the talented field for success.

Gregers ran third in the 2014 edition of the Robert Sangster and has returned to racing in typically slick form this time; unlucky to finish second in the 55 Second Handicap (955m) first-up before running a pleasing third in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) on April 18th.

Treated well in the weights as a three-year-old Wawail is yet to finish outside the first three over her seven start career to date and enters the 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes off the back of a solid effort for third in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) on March 27th.

Thrilled with the condition of both runners, Hayes is confident Gregers and Wawail are each offered an edge perhaps lacking with our 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes contestants.

“I think both of them will run really well in what is a hot race,” Hayes told Racing Victoria.

“Gregers nearly won it last year and she’s in better form than last year.

“Wawail wins more than she loses.  She’s dropping back in distance and she has the blinkers on which sometimes can work a treat.”

Posting six career wins and as many minors through her 20 competitive starts to date, Gregers has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Craig Williams in the 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes and will leave from the ideal barrier 7 following the scratching of leading contender Platelet.

Returning to racing following a brief freshen up for success in the Pack A Picnic Plate (1100m), Wawail ran third in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and won the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) in her only other start prior to the Alexandra Stakes (1600m).
