2015 Robert Sangster Stakes the Target for Miss Gunpowder

January 19th, 2016

Miss Gunpowder stamped herself as a filly to follow through the recent Melbourne Spring Carnival, and trainer Phillip Stokes has revealed he will likely set the three-year-old for an appearance in the 2016 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) upon resuming this time.

Miss Gunpowder has appeared on course competitively only six times since making her debut in March 2015, but has proven she is more than up to the class of her age group via a number of impressive results at black type level and failing to finish outside the first three on all but one occasion.

Stokes told Racing Ahead the classy daughter of Pendragon has taken plenty of benefit from her time away from racing and will likely be kept for a late autumn campaign peaking with the 2016 Robert Sangster Stakes at her home track at Morphettville on April 30th.

“She is back in the stable as we speak,” Stokes said.

“She had a couple of feet issues, so it took a bit longer than we wanted to bring her back.

“I need to remap her program, but we have plenty of black-type races here and there is a race like the Robert Sangster that we might be able to look at or there is Sydney obviously.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to her debut, Miss Gunpowder made an ideal transition to competition when winning the Darley Handicap (1050m) by close to three lengths on March 14th before being returned to the paddock with a view towards spring.

Continuing her unbeaten run through the Irish Race Day BM68 (1100m) first-up on July 25th, the filly out of Forever Rafter made a competitive transition to black type company when third in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) on August 15th.

Returning to winning form in the Hughes Chauffeured Limos Plate (1250m) on September 5th, Miss Gunpowder undoubtedly mustered her best performance to date when successful in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), but failed to fire when eighth in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) most recently on October 10th.
