Sheidel Hard to Beat in 2016 Robert Sangster Stakes

May 6th, 2016

Lindsay Park will saddle three runners in the 2016 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), but co-trainer Tom Dabernig has underlined classy mare Sheidel as the team’s best chance of success in the Group 1 feature at Morphettville on Saturday.

A former Perth galloper, Sheidel has been a standout performer through her entire racing career so far; posting an impressive twelve race wins and three minors through only eighteen competitive starts.

Having stormed home to beat a classy field to the line in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield a fortnight after, Dabernig told Racing Ahead the team is thrilled with the condition of both Miss Promiscuity and Wawail, but believe the conditions of the race should play directly into the strengths of Sheidel.

“She’s come through really well, and I think she’s really coming right,” Dabernig said.

“Now she’s had the benefit of those three runs she’s really nice and fit and is undefeated at 1200m.

“She jumped really cleanly last start but the two starts before that she bungled it a bit, so I would hope from barrier 1 she’ll jump cleanly.

“If she jumps well, she’s probably got the speed to be right there or nearly leading.

“She’s hardened fit and probably the pick of our three in the race.”

Sheidel immediately stamped herself as one to follow upon debuting to racing in 2014; taking out each of her first two starts with complete ease.

Resuming in 2015 for success in the Westspeed Plate (1100m) at Ascot, Sheidel was undoubtedly the stable star for trainer Doug Harrison in taking out five subsequent starts, including the Kalatiara Classic (1200m).

Returning in spring for second in the Irish Day Trophy (1000m), the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor made a competitive transition to black type racing when fourth in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m).

Charging home to win the Listed Jungle Mist Classic (1200m) on November 21st, Sheidel ended her west coast tenure with consecutive wins in the Listed Crawford Stakes (1000m) and Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m).

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2016 Robert Sangster Stakes odds, for which Sheidel can be taken at a quote of $14 for success.
